How does it work?
EMDR has a direct effect on the way the brain processes information, releasing emotional experiences that are trapped in the nervous system. A trained therapist works with an individual to recall the distressing memory, thought, or feeling. The therapist then uses bilateral stimulation AKA something you can hear, see, or touch that occurs in a side to side pattern; for example, moving your eyes back and forth.
The distressing memories are reprocessed by the brain, resulting in painful feelings being exchanged for more resolved, relaxed feelings.
Can it work for me?
EMDR can be extremely helpful for people who have experienced a traumatic event and find the memories, feelings, or thoughts of the event still bother them. Some people find recalling the memory difficult; EMDR can help recall and desensitize feelings without directly talking about the event.
